Steven Universe Future(SUF) review
So I watched Steven Universe Future and I loved it. Why? Because it was focusing more on Steven (ep18 hasn't come out yet so I might be wrong) BUT for the past few episodes it just gave Steven a chance to learn more about himself.
It sucks that he has to go through thoughts like "If I'm not my mom, who am I?" and the urge to know what he's going to do in his future has him conflicted.
And because he has faced much larger threats when he was a child and he needed to learn to survive, now when he faced minor threat(to his emotion - featuring Connie's rejection) his body is always on standby-survival-mode and THAT IS NOT HEALTHY MY FRIENDS.
Steven is just a kid, regardless how old he is in the SUF. And for him to experience such trauma that he made his own mind and gem to remember the pain and always be ready is just heartbreaking.
Not only that, the fact that he is always there for people but people aren't there for him FRUSTRATES me even more. Like the Peridot episode.. He felt he needed a purpose/excuse to be with someone and that's unhealthy(x2).
Not only that, when he was experiencing the body changes and he couldn't learn to accept himself because he was afraid of hurting others..He should not be afraid of himself, it pains me to see him like that. I was glad when Jasper thought him to make better use of his powers but the full intention was not there.
Let's look at the participants and the potential help they gave to Steven that was not really helping him.
Pearl, Garnet and Amethyst: Mom-like help that made him feel afraid of himself. They try to calm him down but by asserting that he was in the wrong WAS NOT A GREAT METHOD.
Greg(Steven's dad) : He tried to calm down Steven as he understood that he was going through a rough patch but helping Steven understand himself(discover what he wanted to do with life) through forcing him into the same experience of how he found himself creates PRESSURE and DISCOMFORT on Steven.
And honestly Greg, Steven is right when he compared it'd be better for him to experience that kind of family. Because, imagine being a child and having to fix all your mother's problems, helping other people and saving the universe. It honestly SUFFOCATES him and I'm glad that this SUF is just showing Steven's self discovery and development.
The diamonds: Overall they tried looking at 3 important aspects(physical, emotional and self-worth) but all of those are not what he really needed.
What he really needed was advice from his own gem and how's he supposed to give advice to himself when he can't even understand much about himself? He is the only species(so far - human diamond) and the exposure of both human and gem lifestyle helps him develop in a way, but doesn't develop as a whole because he's a MIX.
Now Steven is in Rebecca-Knows-Where and till then, i'll try to keep this posted.
I really do hope Steven doesn't go through this alone and the person who is gonna help him does not pressure him, tries to understand him, and feels him with assurance and compassion(sounds like his mom but his mom's a bij for leaving him to face her problems).
